An approximately 85-kilometre long railway section will be electrified. In addition, a feeder station will be built in Kemijärvi. At completion, the electrification will also cover Misi traffic operating point and Kemijärvi railway yard.
The focus of this project lies on the work supplementing the electrification infrastructure, since the railway section has already been improved and its safety devices built in the 21st century. The supplementary work includes reaming of the lattice-girder bridges, structure earthing, protective walls for the overpasses, remote control of the electrified railway and, if necessary, minor alterations to the track, lighting and points heating. The total costs of the project amount to 24 million euros.
