Winter journeys

The main roads are usually in good driving conditions to suit the speed set by Finnish Transport Agency. Pedestrians and bicyclists also have winter maintenance care for their path.

Speed Limits
Winter speed limits are in force throughout the country from the beginning of November to the end of February. Nevertheless, the limits can be lowered already in October and remain in force through April due to exceptional road weather conditions.

Winter tyres

In Finland winter tyres are mandatory from the beginning of December till the end of February. Winter tyres can be either friction or studded tyres.
The depth of the winter tyre thread must be at least 3 millimeters.

Salting

Salt is used on when the road surface is slippery or is expected to become slippery, for example when black ice is present. Salt is used when the outside temperature is -4 or above.

Ploughing

High volume roads are ploughed first and within two hours after it begins snowing. Other public roads are ploughed within six hours after snowfall begins.

6000–7000 km highways are mainly kept free of
ice and snow with the help of salt. The other roads
are partly or completely covered with a layer of
compacted snow. Some 10 % of the annual vehicle
mileage is generated on roads with a snow or ice
covered surface.

The Moose is loose!

The highest risk of road accidents with moose is in September during dawn and dusk. It is advisory to take notice of posted moose warning signs and adjust your speed accordingly.

Reflectors save lives

During the dark periods of autumn and winter, pedestrians are advised to wear reflectors even while on lighted roads. Reflectors help drivers notice pedestrians well in advance.
