The transport system and the environment

The Finnish Transport Agency is currently building up its environmental system. The Finnish Transport Agency's environmental policy and environmental programme based thereon will be drafted during 2011 - 2012.

The major environmental issues underlying the Finnish Transport Agency's operation include, in particular, economical use of energy and natural resources, climate change mitigation and adaptation to new requirements, maintaining a sustainable ecosystem, and supporting biodiversity.
Sustainable development comprises collaboration, and the promotion of the economic and social wellbeing of people and the environment.

Sustainable development is a continuous and controlled societal change, which is taking place globally, regionally and locally, with the objective of ensuring good living conditions for current and future generations.

In the dialogue on sustainable development, three foci have emerged: ecological, economic, social and cultural sustainability.
